The cast
Every service we built is named for a Greek god, and always written with its label, what it does, beside it. The myth says which service to restart; it never says how to read the data, which keeps plain, literal names.
Software we did not write, such as the database, the message broker and the monitoring tools, keeps its own name: renaming installed software hides it.
Built
- Chess Board (platform)
- The platform as a whole: the record, the services around it and the repositories.
- Cleo (record)
- The append-only record. The only irreplaceable thing in the stack.
- hermes (collector)
- The one writer: takes each message from the broker, checks it against the contract and writes it to Cleo.
- hermes-weather (weather-poller)
- The weather outside, fetched every hour and handed to hermes.
- hermes-energy (energy-poller)
- The smart meters’ half-hours, fetched every few hours and handed to hermes.
- hermes-claude (claude-usage-poller)
- How much Claude was used, and what it did, fetched every hour and handed to hermes.
- hermes-location (location-door)
- The private door a phone sends its position to, which keeps the position alone and hands it to hermes.
- hestia (host-temperature-probe)
- The server’s own temperatures, handed to hermes.
- mnemosyne (backup)
- What cannot be recreated, copied off the server, and restored back onto it to prove the copy works.
- Proteus (projection-rebuilder)
- Rebuilds every derived table from Cleo, nightly and weekly.
- Iris (read-api)
- The read API: the derived tables over HTTP, read-only.
- Metis (work-writer)
- Writes the work: every task, change and comment becomes a fact in the record, and GitHub is made to agree with it.
- Athena (work-board)
- The board the work is done from, drawn from the record, each change written back through Metis.
- Olympus (home-page)
- The front door: one page that opens every tool.
- Argus (watchdog)
- Works out every id in Cleo again from its own row, weekly, and reports what it found. It reads the whole record and writes none of it.
- Lynceus (container-inspector)
- Every app on the server, every image and how each was made, read from Docker without the power to change any of it.
- Theia (observability)
- Our own monitoring dashboards app: every board defined as code, and every panel a read-only question.
- Pythia (database-console)
- The database under Cleo, shown and asked: every table and view, and a console that can only read.
- Tiresias (data-answerer)
- A question about the data in plain English, answered by an agent whose only tools read.
- Aglaea (brand)
- The Chesser brand: its colours, type and marks. This site wears it.
- Hephaestus (software-factory)
- The software factory: AI agents that take a work item from ready to closed.
- Rhea (repo-provisioner)
- Creates the repositories, and keeps their settings in line with one declared list.
- KIME (assistant)
- Knowing Intelligence, Mistress of Everything: the assistant you ask, said Kim. Planned, on the record underneath.
Reserved, not built yet
- Cerberus (login-gateway)
- Sign-in, and the gateway in front of everything.
- Chronos (scheduler)
- The scheduler, if the timers ever outgrow themselves.
- Pheme (publisher)
- Publishing anything outward: the only way a live figure will ever reach this site.
- Atlas (architecture-diagram)
- The map of the stack, drawn from the files it runs from and never by hand.
The three repositories
- chess-board (application-repo)
- The application and the record.
- chess-pawns (machine-setup-repo)
- The machines, set up by Ansible.
- chess-themis (deployment-repo)
- What should be running, machine by machine, which each machine applies itself.
The source
The repositories behind all of this are private for now. Each will go public on its own, once its whole history has been swept, and get a link here. See Open source.
